Week 11 was our first varsity challenge with major implications. All varsity athletes continue to fight for their spot atop the leaderboard, but this week our 6,7, and 8 seeds competed for one final spot at our first preseason competition vs. Templeton. As most of the team watched from behind the 9th green, Max (the 8 seed) came walking down the fairway and addressed a ball about 170 yards out. He took his swing and landed the ball on the right side of the fairway about 15 yards short of the green and let the slope do the rest of the work. His ball came to rest about 7 feet from the hole. Not knowing Max's current score, the team began to chatter excitedly about the meaning (or not) of the impending putt. As the rest of his group came down, Ben yelled out, "This putt is for a 42!" The top score of the qualifying group was a 43. Max had a birdie putt on the final hole to clinch his spot for the Templeton match. Without wasting much time, Max calmly sunk his putt and the team went nuts. Well done, Max!

While it's always a bummer to not get to take all worthy competitors to a dual, it is fun to know that the same guys will come back the next week, ready to earn their spot.

The following day our 6 qualifiers headed up to a tough course at Hunter Ranch. We teed off on the back 9 (very tight set of holes) and got off to a great start. John and Noah both found good spots in the fairway on hole 10, and as the second group prepared at the tee box, we saw John jumping up and down and heard him yelling. He was already in with an eagle! Holed out from about 85 yards over the creek onto a small, sloped green. While there weren't anymore eagles on the day, the team fared well against the competition and we got to ride home with our first victory on the season. We move into our Spring Break schedule this week and will hold another challenge for the #6 spot this week at Chalk Mountain. Good luck and work hard, gentlemen!
